About our Services
Method and Mission:
In order to properly assess the quality and value of a work of art, knowledge is required of the condition, the provenance, the author and the contemporary art market. We have the knowledge and expertise to map out these aspects for you.
Paintings of old masters are rarely in their original condition: due to wear, damage or an altered taste ,they have often undergone changes that are not immediately visible. One aspect of our connoisseurship is the ability to “see through” surface dirt and discoloration and recognize the masterpiece that is otherwise obscured. Since paintings of old masters are often unsigned, thorough art-historical research is needed to establish the identity of the author. We evaluate paintings on the basis of our experience of the style and the technique of the artists. Our judgment is grounded in a thorough understanding of the work itself. On the basis of empirical evidence, refinement of perception about technique and form, provenance research and a disciplined method of analysis, we attribute authorship, determine the date of manufacture, validate authenticity and appraise quality. These findings are crucial for the valuation of works.
The guiding principle of our approach is the firm conviction that the attractiveness and value of a painting are enhanced by presenting the art work - where possible - in its original condition and with a clear report on the artist, the meaning and representation mode of the subject, style, origin, date, materials and interventions.
In this way our knowledge and skills generate capital. We and our clients contribute to the preservation of heritage.
